Lip Augmentation

Lip Augmentation

Lip augmentation plumps the lips, giving them a fuller appearance, and helps reduce wrinkles around the mouth. The permanency and extent to which the lips are enlarged depends on the patient's personal preference and should be discussed thoroughly with Dr. Kim prior to the procedure. Lip augmentation options include natural or synthetic injection, surgical implants, and laser lip rejuvenation. See the Skin Rejuvenation section for a description of the non-surgical/non-injection options.

Technique

Injections can be either temporary or permanent, depending on the material used and patient preference. Proper placement of the chosen substance is crucial to the ultimate effect and may be injected into the inside corners of the mouth or inserted via tiny hidden incisions. Injectable materials include autologous (one's own) or donated tissue, as well as synthetic biocompatible substances (e.g., Restylane®, Radiesse®) very similar to that found naturally in the body. An operation to insert a natural collagen sheet implant, similar to a strand of spaghetti, may be performed with well-tolerated substances such as Gore-Tex and AlloDerm.

Post-surgery Expectations

Patients will be provided with detailed instruction for post-operative care at the time of surgery. Pain should be minimal and minor swelling will likely occur. Final results may take up to a few days to ascertain and depending on desired results, subsequent injections may be necessary.
